A famous writer was asked to speak to a bunch of eager college students and share his wisdom about how to become a writer. He entered the lecture hall, stood behind the podium, and said, ‘So you want to be a writer? So write.’
I recently saw a segment on CBS News Sunday Morning about a professor discussing her research into personalities. Her research found that no one’s personality is fixed. If you want to change it, and ultimately your life along with it, act like the person you aspire to be. We had just returned from a family trip, our luggage still sitting near the front door, when it dawned on me. If I want to be a travel writer, I should just do it.
I’ve dreamed of being a travel writer since I studied abroad in Ireland in college. During that time I traveled to Paris, London, and Switzerland, met extraordinary people, tasted foods I’d never experienced, and gazed upon a multitude of famous landmarks. These experiences fueled my passion to keep exploring and to write about it.
Traveling as a mom of boys provides me with a unique perspective. My goal in all things, especially travel, is to find the balance between kid-friendly experiences and actually enjoying yourself.
I hope you’ll find my travel writing, Mom on Deck, to be helpful, inspiring, and if nothing else, entertaining. Hopefully, the joy I find in writing it will come through the screen and bring a sliver of joy into your life, too.
Best,
Ashley
